On Friday the 17th of October, Dales Financial Director, Nicola, and Marketing Coordinator, Grace, visited Ladywood Primary School in Kirk Hallam – Nicola’s former school – to take part in the school’s Careers Week. They spent the morning talking to pupils about their roles at Dales and how their early passions helped shape the careers they have today.
Back to Where It All Began
While preparing their session, Nicola and Grace realised just how much their favourite school subjects influenced their career choices. Nicola’s love of maths from a young age led her into accountancy, whilst Grace’s enthusiasm for all things creative paved the way for a career in marketing.
Although primary school might seem early to start thinking about future careers, research shows that children can begin to lose confidence in their dreams from as young as five. Girls, in particular, may start to believe certain jobs aren’t suited to them. That’s why Dales felt it was so important to show the pupils at Ladywood that what they enjoy now could one day become what they do for a living.
Hands-On Learning with Dales Products
To make the session more interactive, Nicola and Grace brought along a selection of brightly coloured Dales products (with special thanks to Becky in the paint plant for creating these!). The children were fascinated by the pieces, comparing them to Lego, and even discovering that downpipes make excellent bracelets while hoppers double up as binoculars.
It was a lively morning filled with curiosity, creativity and plenty of questions. Hopefully, it sparked a few dreams of becoming future marketers, finance directors, or maybe even future members of the Dales team.
A huge thank you to Ladywood Primary School for inviting Nicola and Grace and giving them such a warm welcome.
