Project overview:

Led by Conlon Construction & K2 Architects, with Stafford Rainwater Systems delivering installation works, the Heywood civic centre refurbishment & extension project forms a key component of a wider masterplan to improve Heywood town centre. Supported by funding from Rochdale Borough Council, Arts Council England, and Your Trust, the redevelopment aims to breathe new life into the aging facility, attract new visitors to the venue, and ensure it continues to play a key role in the town for decades to come.

Dales’ Involvement:

Dales are proud to be providing our aluminium products to support the building’s refreshed identity and long-term performance. For the project, Dales are supplying our Sigma Fascia Soffit and 101.6mm Rainwater Pipe in RAL 8016 Matt and our Delta Gutter and 76.2mm Rainwater Pipe in RAL 9005 Matt. The selected products and finishes support a contemporary, durable aesthetic, while the Sigma Fascia Soffit system will integrate LED strip lighting to enhance the visual impact of the building’s new frontage. Installation is progressing very well, with thanks to the team at Stafford Rainwater Systems Ltd.

Upgrading a valued community venue:

The existing Civic Centre – home to performances, community events, dance classes, and leisure activities – was increasingly constrained by outdated infrastructure and accessibility limitations. The refurbishment and modest extension will transform the building into a modern and flexible space, with improved commercial viability.

This project ties into the redevelopment of Peine Square, which is being enhanced with new green spaces, tiered seating, a mini stage, planting, paving, lighting and other improvements – forming the first project to be delivered through the government’s £20m ‘Plan for Neighbourhoods.’

Key improvements include:

    • A modernised performance space with upgraded lighting and sound
    • Retractable auditorium seating for improved accessibility and versatility
    • A design approach which prioritises sustainability throughout
    • A new café and bar area
    • New glazed front overlooking Peine Square

Looking ahead:

The multi-million-pound scheme is set to complete at the end of 2025, and reopen to the public in early 2026, with first events scheduled for late February. We look forward to seeing the final result and the role this revitalised venue will play in Heywood.
