Manufacturing Engineering Apprentices start at Dales

Two new Apprentices have been recruited by Dales Fabrications Ltd: Alex Millington and Sam Frost have both secured places on the Manufacturing Engineering Foundation Degree course accredited by Sheffield Hallam University at Derby College.

Both Alex & Sam are hoping to follow the example set by colleague, and former apprentice, David Pritchard and successfully complete the final year to convert the qualification to a BEng Degree.

Alex Millington is new to Dales having successfully achieved a Distinction for his BTEC level 3 in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering at Derby College. One of his tutors knew that Dales were recruiting and, after noticing Alex using CAD for a project, put him in touch with Dales.  Alex spent a couple of days of work experience in our Production department, which included CNC punching, processing, and using our 3D Software design package.

Karl Prosser: Managing Directer, noticed that Alex showed a lot of potential;

“Alex demonstrated a clear aptitude and skill. He also brings with him an experience of Mig & Tig welding which demonstrates his skill and obvious enthusiasm for manufacturing engineering”

Alex accepted the position following his work experience and after researching the company online;

“The projects & designs on the company’s website were really interesting and pulled me towards joining Dales”.

Alex really likes the design side of engineering and feels Dales will give him the opportunity to express his keen interest and skill in that discipline.

Sam Frost started his apprenticeship with Dales in June 2019, after completing his ‘A’ levels at Belper School Sixth Form. Sam wanted a career in a construction-related business but was keen to avoid working at a large firm. Sam said;

“I like the personal nature of a family business like Dales: I think you can easily lose your identity in a large corporate company.

Back at my interview, Karl (Prosser: Managing Director at Dales) mentioned the possibility of completing a degree as part of my apprenticeship.

I am really pleased to have secured a place. I’m a little apprehensive but looking forward to the challenge.”
